V.O. Chidambaranar Port Trust, Tuticorin, celebrated the 49th National Maritime Day on its premises here on Thursday. The programme commenced with honouring of sailors, who sacrificed their lives.
In recognition of sacrifices made by sailors in the days of yore, A. Subbiah, Chairman of the Port, placed wreaths at the sailors' memorial at Zone – B and a two minute silence was also observed. Then, Mr. Subbiah arrived at Zone – A in the eighth berth of the Port and took salute as four boats, including two pilot launchers and a couple of tug boats, sailed past the venue. After having received the salute from sailors at the helm of the tug vessels, Mr. Subbiah lauded the role of sailors.

Many families of the Port officials, employees and other workers turned out to watch the event. Besides, competitions like tug of war between the port officials and port users were held, in which the port officials won. Apart from this, pot breaking event was also organized. As part of the celebrations, the students of Harbour School competed in cricket and swimming besides an essay writing competition. The winners were given prizes.
